An air handling unit (AHU) is an essential piece of equipment to ensure air quality in buildings. It treats the air by filtering, heating, cooling, humidifying, or dehumidifying it according to needs. The AHU thus provides effective ventilation by supplying fresh air and extracting polluted air to maintain a healthy indoor environment.
Fresh ventilation air, once brought to the comfort temperature inside the building, is generally expelled outside while still having a higher energy level than the incoming outdoor air. The goal is to transfer this heat from the extracted air to the fresh air, thereby enabling significant savings on the heating budget.
The principle of regenerative (or accumulation) heat exchangers involves passing the extracted air through an accumulative material that stores heat. This material is then traversed by the fresh air stream, to which it returns the stored energy. Among the various available technologies, we recommend the use of a plate heat exchanger, known for its efficiency and numerous advantages.
